If you thought that the battle between avian and swine was limited to the confines of your mobile device, think again. Rovio, the developer behind Angry Birds, revealed in the latest print (!!!!) issue of Wired UK that a social version of Angry Birds is in development and will be arriving on Facebook later this year. News of Angry Birds expanding to consoles was already known so it comes to no surprise that Rovio is also going to be pushing its game to the largest online people network in the world. Mikael Hed, the Angry Birds studio boss promised that in the Facebook version the pigs will have a much more prominent role and it will also feature aspects unique to the Facebook platform.
And this is just the beginning. Rovio has dreams of expanding the Angry Birds franchise into multiple spin-offs including racing games and sports games. The Mariozation of Angry Birds is actually part of Rovio’s strategy which Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka dubs “Disney 2.0.” Says Vesterbacka, “we’re building an integrated entertainment franchise where merchandising, games, movies, TV, cartoons and comics all come together.” Judging by the unfaltering momentum Angry Birds currently has, now is definitely the time to expand.
